As the weather warms, it’s time to start thinking about how to keep the kids busy during summer break.
And Everyday California, an ocean adventure brand in La Jolla Shores at 2160 Avenida de la Playa, has a solution, offering five-day, half-day surf camps for kids of all levels ages 5-15 who can swim on Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Surf camps start the week of June 10.
Led by expert instructors, campers are taught the fundamentals of surfing as well as about surfing history and water safety while playing fun games. Whether kids are brand new to the sport, or looking to polish their techniques, staff will tailor their lessons to match their interests with a 3-to-1 ratio of students to instructors. Lessons begin with sand games, lessons on surfing history and ocean safety, and finish with a pizza party to end the week. Each camp day promises to be exciting and different.
Brian Stevens, the company’s director of operations, and Alexandra Mier y Teran, Everyday California’s marketing manager, discussed their company’s summer surf camp detailing what it’s all about.
“We started with kayaking and it wasn’t until 2019-20 that we got our surf permit and started teaching students of all ability levels,” said Mier y Teran adding, “We do groups and private lessons, serving everyone from those who’ve never touched a surfboard, to those more intermediate who want to hone their skills. We also have our kid’s surf camps for ages 5 and above that run June through August.”
Mier y Teran added instructors will group kids in their classes according to their skill levels, putting those more competent in the water together. “We want to give everyone individual attention, make sure every kid is having fun and that they’re catching waves,” she said.
“Our instructors have a pretty rigorous training and are certified in first aid, lifeguarding, CPR, and water safety,” noted Stevens adding, “The surf school program we’ve developed is super fun. The kids have a blast.”
“A lot of the kids like surf camp so much they return year after year,” added Mier y Teran. “They love it and it brings their friends and families together.”
Everyday California instructors point out that their kid’s surf camps differ from standard beach lessons. Along with the basics of posture and stance, students also learn proper surf etiquette. “We want to make sure kids do things the right way so they can be in the (surf) lineup,” noted Stevens.
Mier y Teran said Everyday California is “really eager to have a great summer filling up all our bookings for our group and private lessons and kid’s surf camps.
Stevens pointed out that 120 to 150 kids typically will circulate through the 10 weeks of their summer surf camps.

EVERYDAY CALIFORNIA HISTORY
How Everyday California began is an interesting tale. The Great Recession of 2008 turned out to the best thing that ever happened for Everyday California’s co-founders Chris Lynch and Michael Samer. It caused them to lose all hope of finding a career out of college. So they ended up on the beach and unemployed. But with nothing to lose, they took a leap of faith and started a small ocean adventure company.
The company began as little more than a few kayaks, an old pick-up truck, and a few guys running discounted adventure tours, booking appointments in between cleaning gear and taking people out on the water, according to everydaycalifornia.com. After some success, they found a space to open up their first shop, which was just larger than 500 square feet but had a ton of “character.” It was a start.
Since then, Everyday California has found a much larger space and expanded its brand into apparel and lifestyle products, along with doing kayak tours and offering surf camps and lessons. The founders are now living their original dream: to share the California lifestyle with everyone worldwide.
