On Saturday June 20, beachgoers and surf enthusiasts from around the world will come together to celebrate the Surfrider Foundation’s 11th annual International Surfing Day. The Surfrider Foundation San Diego County Chapter is teaming up with radio station FM 94.9 to host a free family-friendly event in Ocean Beach, on the grassy area next to Veterans Plaza and the Santa Monica lifeguard station, from 6 to 10 p.m.??
During the day, the Surfrider Foundation booth will be set up, along with Urban Surf 4 Kids and Crossfit Ocean Beach, from 6 to 8 p.m., with games, pizza, popcorn, beverages, raffle prizes and family-friendly activities on site. From 8 to 10 p.m., there will be a free outdoor screening of the classic surf film, “5 Summer Stories.” Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket, towel or lawn chair and watch the film from the grass.
“International Surfing Day is a day to celebrate the sport of surfing and give back to the oceans, waves and beaches that provide us with so much,” says San Diego County Chapter manager Mandy Sackett, “We could not be more stoked to celebrate in Ocean Beach with a free outdoor screening of the classic surf film ‘5 Summer Stories.'”
Founded in 2005 by Surfrider Foundation and Surfing magazine, International Surfing Day started with 16 domestic and one international event and has grown exponentially to more than 200 events in more than 30 countries. Since its inception, approximately 70 tons of trash has been removed from beaches.
