The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation presented the second annual Sycuan Fashion Show at its iconic casino and resort on Sept. 7. The theme for the evening was “Walking in Harmony with Nature.” Their goal is to inspire the youth and create a place for native artists in the mainstream. Guests arrived at dusk surrounded by the picturesque pool and cabana.
As the sun went behind the mountain, the fashion show began in this impressive setting. The models began strolling on a runway with lights across the pool. The show creates a platform for Native Americans to present their art. Some designers specialize in traditional Native art forms, such as beadwork. The program director for this awesome show was Angelica Labrake and the Master of Ceremonies was Ruben Littlehead. He started the festivities with the Bird Songs.
The fashion show began with Ana Gloria (Martha) Rodriguez, a well-known basketmaker, who I have had the pleasure of studying with at Sycuan. She is also an instructor of pottery and Kumeyaay foods at Kumeyaay Community College. You can also see her designs at Kosay Kumeyaay Market In Old Town. Charlie N. Cuny showed off her beautiful hats with intricate beadwork. JD Custom Clothier returned for a second year presenting his tailored men’s wear. She Holds the Sky and Nan B showcased their designs before Rebekah Jarvey closed out the first half of the show with her colorful print dress and matching handbag.
Part two was another stellar lineup of designers. One of the standouts was Ben Leedom from the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. He presented his 3 Feathers Star Quilts to the crowd. Alice Phelps designed beautiful Pendleton jackets and coats. Codijo Chebon Yazzie debuted his beaded clothing designs. His mother Rosine Tree and sister Cheyleen Yazzie returned for their second year. Tylor Jean Etsitty-Arthur from Arizona and Jadeane Labrake from the Kumeyaay Nation were both new to the runway this year. Della BigHair-Stump returned with her fashion and accessories. Della’s intricate bead work is amazing. If you missed this awe-inspiring show, stay tuned at sycuan.com.
