Local scholastic girls tennis teams are hoping to serve up winning seasons this year.
At The Bishop’s School, the Lady Knights and Head Coach Jose Ruelas came into play this week with a 2-0 record.
Ruelas will look to senior captain Jackie Schulze, along with the junior doubles tandem of Lila Abed and Sarah Peluso, and sophomore Elizabeth Alexander to lead the way.
“We lost five seniors to graduation, so we’re in a rebuilding season, but we have some really good freshman talent added to the team,” Ruelas said. “The Coastal League gets tougher each year,” he added when asked about the team’s chances to win its league.
Bishop’s was co-champion in the Coastal League last season and lost in the CIF semis to eventual champion La Jolla High.
La Jolla High won its seventh straight team title last season and despite a number of graduations heading into this season, the Lady Vikings figure to be in the championship mix once again.
Key players look to be Hannah Holladay, Elyse Cummins, Jenna Essakow, Alexis Archambault, Izzy Taylor and Chelsea Raley.
“We have lost three of our key players (Schon triplets), but with our depth I am hoping for another winning season,” La Jolla High Head Coach Maggie Mulkins noted.
” Editor’s note: La Jolla Country Day School did not respond to a request for information on this season’s team prior to press time.
