And they’re off… the horses for sure, but it was the pretty “fillies” in the Turf Club garnering a lot of applause. “Suite” life central was at Dianne Bashor’s, a horse owner too, and ringside was Hollywood’s powerhouse producer Gary Barber, horse owner and head of Spyglass Entertainment. Memories swirled of Bo Derek, Sid and Jenny Craig, T. Boone Pickens, Dave Copley, and legendary Dallas Cowboys former QB Troy Aikman in the Deason/Panos suite. The special winners of the day were Kathe and Mark Albrecht celebrating 50 years of marriage, and to cap it off, they celebrated two super long shot wins! Happy times at the track!
A few days later a special horse related event took place as described by event co-host Brigitte Adams. “Thanks to our beloved Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty for hosting our event showcasing Essy Ghavameddini’s fabulous photography to create awareness for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund! Thanks to co-host Mark McDonald, Essy Ghavameddini, Darrell Haire, Mike Smith, Eric Jones, Mark Shapiro, GK Fashions, Mermaids & Cowboys and all of our attendees for making it a success!”
And yes, having been on “Baywatch,” along the path I was called Baywatch Barbie from time to time as far away as Italy. Well this “Barbie” was happy to do lifeguard duties once again for real.
Early in the morning last week a neighbor went running by with a towel and came back calmly with an osprey wrapped in the towel, eyes covered. He handed me scissors and said we must free it from the fishing hook in its tongue and fishing line ensnaring its wing. Ten snips at arms-length later, oh those talons are big, done.
He placed it on the ground, and it looked back and forth four times slowly at us as if saying thank you and flew off. Special thanks to my wishing to be anonymous neighbor for being the real super-hero. His knowledge of hawks made all the difference.
By the way, I was a real beach lifeguard once upon a time. I rescued one of the founding owners’ family members of the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club…but that’s another story! ‘Til next time!
