
The Giant Dipper and the Plunge celebrate 85 years The Giant Dipper Roller Coaster ate Belmont Park in Mission Beach celebrated its 85th anniversary on July 4. When the roller coaster first opened, riders rode without seat belts and paid only 10 cents to ride. The Mission Beach Plunge swimming pool, originally a salt water pool, celebrated its 85th anniversary on May 29. To honor these anniversaries, Belmont Park is offering the chance to win one of two parties at the park. One lucky person will win a party for eight with unlimited rides, 20 arcade tokens, unlimited Vault Laser Maze Challenge, unlimited Glow Mini-Golf and pizza and drinks. The second lucky winner will receive a party for eight children with one hour on the Flow Rider, two hours in the Plunge pool, Bounce House, Slip N Slide, balloons, pizza and drinks. The free event will take place on Sunday, July 11, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities will include a bounce house, crafts and face painting. Popcorn, snow cones and hot dogs will be available for a nominal fee. Live music, games and prizes will also be part of the festivities. Philip Rivers hosts football camp This weekend, San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers will hold his first local football camp in La Jolla. The all-pro quarterback will be on hand at the University of California, San Diego on July 10-11 to help guide and assist young boys and girls in learning the essentials of football at the Old Spice Philip Rivers Football Camp. The camp is open to kids 7 to 14 years old, although space is limited. The Chargers starting quarterback will participate throughout the entire camp, which runs from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. both days. Rivers of Hope Foundation is online at www.riversofhomefoundation.com Survivor Beach planned Sunday at La Jolla Shores La Jolla’s shoreline will swell with support for cancer patients and survivors on Sunday, July 11 as part of the fourth annual Survivor Beach event. From 8 to 11 a.m., surfers, cancer survivors and other advocates will line up their surfboards nose-to-tail starting at Scripps Pier. The line will extend along La Jolla Shores to raise awareness for research and recognize those whose lives have been affected by the disease. This year’s event, sponsored by the biotechnology firm Genentech, will attempt to secure a world record for the longest line of surfboards. Participants will hear stories from cancer survivors and sway to the strains of live music from local Josh Bonas and authentic dances by Heali’i’s Polynesian Revue, in addition to receiving souvenirs and a chance to win two tickets to the 17th annual Moores University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Cancer Center Luau and Longboard Invitational.
