Gilman Drive Bridge – The Gilman Drive Bridge celebrated its official opening in early February. Finishing work, including sand blasting and patching blemishes, has been completed. Additional striping, sidewalks and crosswalk improvements adjacent to the project site will be conducted as part of the Medical Center Drive South Improvement Project. Mid-Coast Trolley Construction along Genesee Avenue – Mid-Coast Trolley at the Genesee Avenue and La Jolla Village Drive intersection is complete. This work involved setting and securing four mega-ton girders at the intersection. The construction schedule for the girder installation at the final intersection in this area (at the UTC Transit Center) will be provided in the coming weeks. Due to the complexity of the work, closures can be postponed at any time without notice. For up-to-date closure updates, visit KeepSanDiegoMoving.com/MidCoastTrolley.
Fire Station 50 – Fire Station 50 (to be located on the southeast corner of Nobel Drive and Shoreline Drive) is currently in its design and permitting phase. Building construction is anticipated to start in late summer 2019. Meanwhile, grading (ensuring a level base for the project’s foundation) on the project site will start soon, and the wet utilities (water and sewer connections) will begin shortly after the site grading. UC celebration committee
It takes a whole community to plan a Fourth of July event, and volunteers are needed to plan the annual UC Celebration at Standley Park. The Fourth of July Celebration committee held its first meeting in February. Their next meeting will be March 6 at the Recreation Center. The all-day event includes a morning 5k race, pancake breakfast, kids bicycle and pet parade. For more information, contact event chair Randall Tonini at [email protected]. UC Talks podcasts The University City Community Association has started posting podcasts as “UC Talks” that can be found on SoundCloud.com or through a link on universitycitynews.org. UC Talks is a hyper-local podcast that features conversations, interviews relating to University City. To submit an idea, email [email protected]. Highlights of the monthly newsletter will also be recorded as a service to those who do not receive the paper newsletter, to those who have children that attend schools in the area, to those who work in the greater UC area, and to those who would rather listen to the newsletter. The podcasts are funded by a grant from the County of San Diego, as an additional service to the community, because University City is more than just a neighborhood. Good Deeds: Local Scouts Achieve Eagle Rank
In 2018, University City’s own Troop 11 had six Boy Scout’s earn Scouting’s highest honor, that of Eagle Scout. To obtain the rank of Eagle Scout, a Scout must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges, be active in his troop and community, hold positions of leadership within the troop and organize and complete a service project. These Scouts service projects benefited our local Little Leagues, the Bennington Memorial Oak Grove in Balboa Park and Whittier Academy, a local school for children with special needs. Troop 11 is San Diego’s second oldest Boy Scout Troop (102 years old) and has helped numerous past Scouts achieve Eagle Scout. Additional Scouts are already on track to finish their Eagle Scout rank in 2019.
