The San Diego Wave came out with another 2-0 victory after defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place in the third group stage match of the CONCACAF W Champions Cup on Tuesday night.
The victory came just three days after San Diego defeated the Portland Thorns in league play by the same score on Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium and are now in first-place of the Group B standings with nine points ahead of second-place Club América.
The Wave scored both goals on Tuesday in the second-half courtesy of defender Kaitlyn Torpey (59th minute) and Amirah Ali (67th minute) just moments after coming in as a substitute.
San Diego Wave now returns to NWSL play and will face the fifth-seeded North Carolina Courage at WakeMed Soccer Park on Saturday. SD Wave finds itself in 10th place with 22 points trailing the eight-seeded Bay FC by six points with four games left.
As things stand, the Wave will have to treat any result other than a victory as a defeat meaning that draws will do little to help the team, led by interim head coach Landon Donavan, to a third-straight postseason appearance. Two of its remaining matches will be at home against the Houston Dash on Oct. 13 and the other come in the regular season finale versus Racing Louisville on Nov. 3. SD Wave also has another road game which will be on Oct. 19 against the fourth-seeded Kansas City Current.
Last season saw the Washington Spirit sneak in as the eight-seed with 30 points but that was when the regular season only had 22 games.
If the Wave is to make the playoffs this time, it will probably need to go undefeated with at least three wins while hoping that the final match against Louisville becomes a due or die scenario at Snapdragon Stadium
