San Diego Wave FC earned a nail-biting 2-1 win over Bay FC on Sunday at Snapdragon Stadium thanks to a header from defender Trinity Armstrong in the final seconds in stoppage time.
The match was a high-intensity back-and-forth from the start with both sides pushing forward looking to create quality chances on the offensive end. San Diego scored first off a corner kick in the sixth minute when defender Kennedy Wesley wedged between Bay defenders and headed the ball by goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz.
The visitors kept up the pressure and forced a turnover, which was capitalized on in the 18th minute with a right-footed shot by midfielder Karlie Lema.
San Diego made several substitutions in the second half adding forwards Adriana Leon, Makenzy Doniak, and Melanie Barcenas to give the team an extra push to help find the winner. In the 88th minute, midfielder Delphine Cascarino’s blast from close range bounced off the post and was cleared away.
But late in stoppage time, Silkowitz deflected Leon’s shot out of bounds setting up a corner kick that turned out to be the game-deciding play. With only seconds remaining, Kenza Dali executed an in-swinging corner kick that 17-year-old Armstrong headed off the turf and over Silkowitz’s hands.
San Diego earned three points and moved to third place in the NWSL standings. The Wave will host the Portland Thorns at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, before traveling to play Gotham FC on May 16.
