The Bishop’s School scored often and used a smothering defense to post a 49-0 win over Army Navy last weekend in scholastic football action.
Bishop’s held Army Navy to four first downs and 94 yards on the day. Patrick Carrillo, Chase Jensen and Mike P. Jensen all had eight tackles, while Zach Franz and Michael Strauss had seven. Will Peck had an interception.
Tim Costello had two TD passes for 122 yards on the day. He also ran one time for 32 yards. Tommy Wornham was 7-of-15 for 192 yards and four TD passes.
Michael Strauss had two TD runs while Mike D. Jensen added a 46-yard TD run. Saron Hood had three receptions for 56 yards and one TD, while Niko Kanakaris added an 11-yard TD reception.
“We played a complete game on both sides of the ball,” Bishop’s head coach Mike David said. “Our defense played exceptionally well once again. I was very pleased with our offensive line play. We were able to establish the run early, which opened everything up.”
La Jolla High came up on the short end of a 21-17 score to host Serra last weekend.
Serra is led this year by returning all-league running back Chris Daniels, who ran for 130-plus yards and two TDs in last year’s meeting. Obviously, the goal for Viking defensive coordinator Rey Hernandez was to stop Daniels.
La Jolla opened the scoring late in the first quarter when senior kicker Andres Liera hit a 27-yard field goal to put the Vikings up by three. Serra responded early in the second quarter to take a 7-3 lead.
Late in the second quarter, the Vikings mounted a 65-yard drive behind the running of fullback Ja’Rood Watson and tailback Jerrell Agnew. Quarterback Casey Richmond also had some nice runs off the option play. Watson gave the Vikings a 10-7 halftime lead with his 1-yard run with 25 seconds left in the half.
In the second half, the Vikings were hit by some special teams mistakes that cost them dearly. After both teams traded field position with punts, the Vikings lined up to punt at their own 29. The long snap sailed over the punter’s head and into the end zone, where an alert Serra defender fell on the ball for a touchdown. At the end of three quarters, Serra led 14-10.
As the fourth quarter opened, the Vikings started on offense on their own 3-yard line, after a long Serra punt. The Vikings then ran off an eight-minute drive of 17 plays that covered 97 yards, and ended up in Serra’s end zone.
Watson pounded the Serra defense with strong runs along the way, while Agnew also chipped in with some runs and capped off the drive with an 11-yard touchdown around the right end. With four minutes left in the game, the Vikings took the lead 17-14.
After a short kickoff by the Vikings, Serra used the running of Daniels to gain several first downs, and caught the Vikings with a 32-yard play action pass for a score to take the lead at 21-17.
La Jolla began its final drive at its own 20. With the two-minute offense on the field, Richmond (15-of-31, 135 yards) led the Vikings down the field with runs of 11 and 5 yards, as well as hitting on key passes to receivers Blake Shelburne (11 and 15 yards) as well as David Harpster (seven yards). With :31 left and the ball at the Serra 15, La Jolla’s drive was stopped by a fine interception by Serra Trent Caldwell to seal the victory for Serra’s homecoming crowd.
Despite the loss, La Jolla’s balanced defense was led by end Edward Johnson’s three solo tackles and two assists, and cornerback Robert Sprong’s six solo tackles.
On offense, Watson led the balanced running game with 115 yards on 22 carries. Agnew pitched in with 52 yards on 12 carries.
“We played well enough to win the game, leading Serra in every offensive stat,” La Jolla head coach Dave Ponsford noted. “But it is the final score that counts, and we made too many special team mistakes to get the win.”
La Jolla hosts Mission Bay this Friday night at 7 p.m.
La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School kept rolling in its 42-0 win at Julian. Senior tailback Kevin Ings, who suffered an injured hip on the first play of the Torreys’ third game this season, celebrated his return to football with a 310-yard (four TDs) rushing romp at Julian’s expense.
Senior fullback Collin Tuck ran well out of the spread set, gaining 27 first-quarter yards and two TDs on six carries.
Adjusting to the weather, the Torreys offense shifted to their ‘I’ formation in the second quarter and Ings immediately brought some heat to a cold night, carrying the ball 13 times for 174 yards and two TDs (15, 42 yards) in the second quarter alone.
As a team, the Torreys totaled 441 yards rushing on 46 carries. Junior kicker Travis Golia was a perfect 6-for-6 on PATs and kicked off well despite the wind and rain.
Constant pressure on the Eagles QB allowed the Torrey defense to rack up its third consecutive shutout. Linemen Andy Altman, Alex Ferre, Anthony Barkett, Alex Yanez and Nikil Nagaraj; defensive ends Mark Schu and Jon Hansbrough; as well as linebackers Tuck, Jamie Coleman, Chris Birks and Mark Hannum spent most of the night in Julian’s backfield, not allowing the Eagles to run or throw the ball with any success.
In the junior varsity contest, LJCD rolled to a 53-0 victory.
LJCD returns to action Oct. 27 versus Tri-City Christian at home at 7 p.m.
