Bishop’s, La Jolla golfers putting away wins
The local scholastic girls golf season continues to swing along.
At The Bishop’s School, head coach Chuck Courtney and the Lady Knights were 2-0 as of last week, scoring wins over Canyon Crest Academy and La Jolla Country Day School.
“Veterans Denell Falk and Libby Hooton are playing nicely, and promising freshman Alexa Bisbas was the medalist, with 46 at the difficult Del Mar Country Club on September 19th,” Courtney noted.
The Lady Knights will have matches upcoming with Horizon (Sept. 27), Francis Parker (Oct. 1) and La Jolla (Oct. 2).
At La Jolla High, the Lady Vikings come into play this week at 5-2 for head coach Chris Spence.
Taylor Doyle has been the strongest player thus far. She has been the low medalist in six of the seven matches.
“We are very pleased with the skill development of our new golfers and are excited to keep things going as we move into league play,” Spence commented.
” Editor’s note: Several requests to La Jolla Country Day School for information on its team were not returned.
Kayak fishing tourney launches Saturday
The water will be teeming with kayak fishermen Saturday, Sept. 29, as the Big Water’s Edge Kayak Fishing Tournament launches from La Jolla Shores.
The tournament is designed for heaviest legal fish and is open to human-powered vessels only, according to organizers.
A change from previous years, Saturday’s event will allow anglers to check in and launch to start catching at 4:30 a.m.
The tournament itself, which runs from 6 a.m. to noon, is sponsored by OEX Drive & Kayak Centers.
The entry fee of $40 includes a T-shirt, a barbecue following the event and a BNig Hammer swimbait pack.
A portion of the entry fee will benefit the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute’s work to revive the white seabass population through the Ocean Resources Enhancement Hatchery Program.
The event will also feature Cash for Trash, an incentive to encourage kayakers to keep the water clean. The kayak fisherman who collects the most trash from the water will win a prize pack.
