The Young Actors’ Theater (YAT) of Spring Valley will perform “High School Musical,” a play based on Disney Channel’s original movie, March 15 through 25 at La Jolla’s Sherwood Auditorium.
With a cast of youth ages 14 to 22 years old, the musical comedy chronicles a group of high school students struggling with issues of popularity, first love, balancing education with extracurricular activities and the value of friends and family, according to Jean Isaac, YAT’s executive director.
“We picked it mostly because the kids who are members of our theater community are completely consumed with it ” everybody loves ‘High School Musical,'” she said. “We were the first theater company in San Diego to be doing it and always knew it was very much one of the things we wanted to be a part of.”
The production is family-oriented and a fun experience for all age groups, Isaac said, adding that the East County community has rallied around the project, helping out with costumes and building the stage set.
Drawing young talent from Poway, Carmel Valley and El Cajon, YAT is a nonprofit organization founded in 2002 that produces five musicals a year and offers dance and voice lessons as well as introductory and advanced acting classes for students in first grade through college.
The play will run March 15-17 and 23-24 at 7 p.m., and March 17-18 and 24-25 at 2 p.m., with a school matinee on March 16 at 10 a.m.
Tickets are still available and can be purchased at www.yatsandiego.org. Prices are $18 for adults, $13 for children under 13 years old and $25 for VIP seating. For more information, call (619) 670-1627.
