Robin Erickson, a resident of La Mesa, recently won the Best of Miniatures award in the San Diego Watercolor Society (SDWS) July Member’s exhibition “Reverberating Notes”, an in-gallery show of the SDWS in Liberty Station. The painting was selected for this honor by prominent local artist and juror Nell Bartlett out of over 250 entries.
Erickson’s painting is titled “Mystery Machinery”. Bartlett commented “The machinery is done with attention to detail, design and color that is bold. This painting is an excellent example of traditional watercolor on paper, a big painting in a little frame!”
This little image was painted on watercolor paper that had been primed with gesso, making the surface very slick and textured. This tends to make the painted image more vibrant, and enables the artist to easily lift color when needed. Results are not always as intended with gessoed surfaces, but always fun to experiment with.
Erickson has been painting for nearly 25 years, and has focused exclusively on watercolor painting.
The SDWS Gallery Exhibit will run through Saturday July 27 at the SDWS gallery at 2528 Dewey Road in Liberty Station, and is free to the public Wednesday – Sunday.
Paintings can be viewed and purchased directly from the gallery, and are also available to view and purchase on the SDWS website at https://www.sdws.org/galleryart.php?cat=7047.
