
As winter turned to spring this week, a number of former local athletes are seeing action on the collegiate scene.Candice Wiggins (La Jolla Country Day School) and the Stanford Lady Cardinal women’s basketball team saw action Monday evening in the NCAA Women’s Tournament.Wiggins tallied a game-high 34 points to lead Stanford to an 88-70 win over Florida State. Wiggins and the Lady Cardinal now move into the round of 16 where they will next face Oklahoma in the San Antonio Regional.On the baseball diamond, Brandon Davis (The Bishop’s School) is seeing action again this season for Georgetown University.Davis drove in four runs and had a pair of hits last Wednesday, March 15, in helping lead the Hoyas to a 9-3 victory over Coppin State. In action this past weekend, Georgetown took 2-of-3 from Duquense. Lisa Dodd (University City High) has a perfect 12-0 mark on the mound for the UCLA women’s softball team. The Lady Bruins sport a remarkable 27-1 record to date.Dodd has also gotten it done with the bat, batting .296, with five homers, 21 hits and 22 RBI.Kiki Kalkstein (La Jolla High School) is a freshman on the University of California, Berkeley women’s lacrosse team. After getting some playing time earlier in the season, Kalkstein was called up as a defensive starter for the Cal-Colgate game on March 12, which Cal won 12-10.Cal is 3-3 this season and will be playing top-ranked Northwestern on March 23. The University of California San Diego men’s and women’s track teams are dotted with local connections this spring.On the men’s side, local grads include seniors Tim Bailey (University City High) and Chris Ferrier (La Jolla High), and sophomore Dan Micolino (La Jolla High). Sophomore Christina Sloyer (La Jolla High) is a member of the women’s team.UCSD will see action March 23-24 in the Point Loma Decathlon/Heptathlon.
