The opening meeting of the La Mesa-El Cajon Branch of the American Association of University Women for the 2023-24 year features Tech Trek campers and their parents. Also available will be some Tech Trek alumni to share in the morning activities.
The meeting will be Sept. 9, with a social half-hour beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Tech Trek is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) camp designed to develop interest, excitement, and self-confidence in young women who will enter eighth grade in the fall. It features hands-on activities in STEM-related fields. In the residential camps, all sleeping, eating, instructional and recreational facilities are located on a university campus.
The Tech Trek campers will share their culminating project from camp and their experiences either on the UCSD campus or at the virtual camp.
Featured speaker will be recent SDSU alumna, Linda Clark.
Clark started her career at Solar Turbines at the age of 18 through their apprenticeship program. While she worked by night, she went to school by day to pursue her dreams of becoming an engineer. Clark is now an entry level rotational engineer at Solar Turbines and recently attained her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from San Diego State University. For her senior Capstone Project, she was part of a team that represented SDSU at the 2022 NASA Lunabotics competition. She recently spoke at the SDSU dedication of the Ellen Ochoa Pavilion (formerly the West Commons) about her journey in STEM education.
Additionally, this meeting kicks off the branch’s annual membership drive. The meeting is open to the public and members are encouraged to bring a friend to see what membership in the branch involves.
All meetings this year will be held at Foothills United Methodist Church 4031 Avocado Blvd. in La Mesa. Social begins at 9:30 and the meeting commences at 10 a.m. with a brief business meeting including voting for the proposed budget.
