Pick up a copy of this year’s selection for adults, Know My Name: A Memoir by Chanel Miller.
This is a compelling first-hand account of the author’s story of surviving sexual assault, reclaiming her identity, and seeking justice. Miller’s writing is raw, insightful, and profoundly human, shedding light on the trauma of sexual assault while inspiring hope and empowerment.
Know My Name is a must-read for its courage and honesty. Join us at the La Mesa Library on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. to discuss this powerful title.
For teens, we’ll be reading Victory. Stand! the inspiring true story of Tommie Smith, the Olympic athlete who raised his fist in protest during the 1968 Olympics.
Co-written with Derrick Barnes and illustrated by Dawud Anyabwile, this memoir explores Smith’s journey from his childhood growing up in rural Texas to his stellar athletic career and how his iconic gesture became a symbol of resistance and courage on an international stage.
This year’s selection is an inspiring read for anyone interested in civil rights and sports history. Teens can discuss Victory. Stand! on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 4 p.m. at the La Mesa Library.
Barrio Rising by María Dolores Águila, with illustrations by Magdalena Mora is this year’s beautiful picture book selection for kids.
Barrio Rising tells the story of a brave young activist and her neighbors during their 12-day protest in San Diego’s Barrio Logan community. Residents united to reclaim their land and preserve their cultural identity, leading to the creation of vibrant Chicano Park. Through María Dolores Águila’s words and Magdalena Mora’s vivid illustrations, the book captures the spirit of resistance and unity that built this historic park.
