FRIDAY, Aug. 9
The 13th annual free Point Loma Summer Concert Series hosts the last of five concerts, featuring The Bayou Brothers, which describes itself as “San Diego’s favorite Zydeco band” with special guest Sue Palmer. Concertgoers can bring their own seating and/or blankets and can order dinner from the night’s sponsor, Stump’s Family Marketplace. The concerts will feature young talent on the “Junior Stage” starting at 5:30 p.m. The main stage performance begins at 6:30 p.m. at Point Loma Park, located at 1049 Catalina Blvd. For more information, call (619) 226-4896, or visit www.plconcerts.org.
 
SATURDAY, Aug. 10
• Comedy Night Fundraiser to benefit the Point Loma Assembly, featuring well-known actor and comedian Mark Christopher Lawrence and funnygirl Katsy Chappell. Local comedy favorites Tony Calabrese and Maria Herman are hosting and organizing the event. Tickets are $20. The Westminster Presbyterian Church Music at Dusk concert series returns each Monday through Aug. 19. The fourth in the “al fresco” concert series features The Spectrum Band. Concerts begin at 6:30 p.m. at 3598 Talbot St. There will be a free-will donation requested. For more information, call (619) 223-3193.  SATURDAY, Aug. 17
Fourth annual Free to Breath San Diego 5K Run/Walk at Liberty Station to benefit the National Lung Cancer Partnership, a nonprofit organization dedicated to research necessary for making the dramatic breakthroughs in early detection and treatment that can save lives. Check-in is 7:15 a.m., the opening rally is at 8:10 a.m. and 5K runners start at 8:30 a.m. 5K walkers begin at 9 a.m. The event takes place at NTC Park on Cushing Street. The cost is $15 online for children and $25 for adults until Aug. 14; $15 mail-in for children and $28 for adults through Aug. 12; and $15 for children and $30 for adults on the day of the event. The Ocean Beach Historical Society will host a free presentation titled “San Diego’s Waterfront Through the Eyes of a Child” by Jim Bregante. Bregante, a docent for the San Diego Maritime Museum and member of the San Diego History Center and Italian Historical Society of San Diego, will speak on the historical nature of the waterfront and Little Italy from the 1930s to present. The Point Loma American Cancer Society Discovery Shop, located at 609 Midway Drive Suite C, has reinstated a 20 percent discount for seniors on Mondays and a 20 percent discount for military on Wednesdays. The discount applies to regular priced articles only. For more information, visit

The Point Loma/Hervey Branch Library chess club meets in an informal format at 2 p.m. on the lower level of the library at the tables near the librarian’s desk.  There are no memberships or dues. All ages and levels of players are welcome. The library provides some chess sets but players may bring their own. The library is located at 3701 Voltaire St. Contact Mark Harryman at the library at (619) 531-1539.
