Police arrest suspected Comerica Bank robber The FBI and San Diego Police Department arrested Dale E. Jenkins, 78, of San Diego, as a suspect the robbery of the Comerica Bank, located at 3361 Rosecrans St., on May 13. The robbery took place at about 1 p.m. when the robber entered the bank, approached a teller and made a verbal demand for money. After receiving a sum of money the robber walked out of the bank towing a rolling suitcase. The robber was described as an elderly white male, wearing a dark suit, white shirt, necktie, glasses and a dark fedora-style hat. Officers responding to the robbery and located Jenkins a short distance from the bank and took him into custody. Jenkins was booked into the Bureau of Prisons (BOP), Metropolitan Correctional Center and was expected to have his initial appearance before a U.S. Magistrate Judge on May 14. Suspected 7-Eleven robber faces long term A San Diego man who pleaded guilty May 10 to robbing three 7-Eleven stores on Midway Drive and Torrey Pines, as well as 11 other heists, faces a prison term ranging from 22-28 years, according to the prosecutor. Alex Sanchez, 23, pleaded guilty to all charges before San Diego Superior Court Judge Eugenia Eyherabide, who is set sentencing for July 15. Deputy District Attorney Martin Doyle said if Sanchez had gone to trial and was convicted of all counts, he would face a prison term of 47 years. Meanwhile, Luis Alonso Cruz, 25, who is accused of participating in the same robbery series with Sanchez, was given a trial date set for July 29. Cruz has pleaded not guilty. Cruz is also charged with separately robbing a liquor store in La Mesa on Sept. 24. Cruz is also charged in El Cajon Superior Court with possession of a firearm by a felon because he has a burglary conviction from 2010, according to court records. The 7-Eleven stores were located at 2387 and 3185 Midway Drive and 13835 Mango Drive. The other stores held up were located in North Park, Chula Vista, Carlsbad, Linda Vista, Mira Mesa and Mission Valley. Cruz was arrested Sept. 24 by La Mesa police and Sanchez was arrested by San Diego police on Oct. 2. Both remain in custody. — Neal Putnam

OBMA seeks volunteers for annual street fair The Ocean Beach MainStreet Association (OBMA) is looking for some helping hands to volunteer in various capacities during the annual Ocean Beach Street Fair and chili Cook-Off on June 22. Volunteers may sign up for three- or four-hour shifts and receive a free event T-shirt. A variety of jobs are available, including setting up and breaking down the chairs and tables at the eating areas, helping sell T-shirts and miscellaneous OBMA products, selling tickets to the chili cook-off, assisting with the community mural and other tasks. The Ocean Beach Historical Society is launching plans for its 19th annual OB Exposed! event on Friday, May 17. The event is a photo exhibition and competition of photos taken in the Ocean Beach and Point Loma areas. The cost to enter is $2 per photo and contestants must closely pay attention to contest rules. Categories in the competition include best in show, best black and white, best color, best vintage, best child’s under age 16, best special effects and people’s choice, among others. OB Exposed! began in 1995 as a way to preserve the photographic history of the area and to create an archive. Loma Portal Home, Garden Tour set for May 19 The Loma Portal PTA will host its annual showcase of hidden gems with a Home & Garden Tour to support Loma Portal Elementary School’s supplies, as well as music and class programs.  Guests will have a chance to tour six homes and gardens in the quaint Loma Portal neighborhood. Participating homes will showcase a variety of unique attributes, including historical restoration, grand outdoor entertainment areas, home renovations, modern living, xeriscaping designs and clever uses of space. A craft fair and opportunity drawing are also planned, featuring wine baskets, spa getaways, home store and restaurant certificates. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Cancer Society thrift store slates new sale The Point Loma American Cancer Society Discovery Shop will host a two-day sale of vintage items on Friday, June 7 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, June 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On sale will be a variety of vintage items, including clothing, jewelry, household articles and more. All proceeds go to benefit cancer research and support programs. The store is located at 3609 Suite D, Midway Drive. Volunteers and donations are always welcome. Summer sailing program welcomes all sailors The Southwestern Yacht Club, located at 2702 Qualtrough St., will offer three two-week sailing classes to sailors of all experience levels beginning in July. The program is designed to combine fun activities with sailing fundamentals. Classes are split by experience levels and include: basic sailing, beginning sabot racing, intermediate sailing, advanced sailing, Laser sailing and double-handed sailing. The club has a history of producing Olympic competitors and national champions. Many instructors of the summer program are Southwestern Yacht Club alumni themselves. Each instructor is an experienced sailor and aquatic specialist with certifications in first aid, CPR and boat handling. Students are required to provide their own boat, but the club does have some boats available for charter for $175 per week. Two-week program prices range from $145 for children to $623 for adults. Garden Club gives $900 for philanthropies Point Loma Garden Club presented checks for more than $900 to the recipients of its 2013 philanthropic projects during the club’s May meeting. Philanthropy chairwoman Margaret Cook introduced Bill Homyak, program coordinator for Landscape & Nursery Technology at Southwestern College, who presented student recipient Jose Ivan Ramos Aguilar. Mary Ryan Barthel, founder of “Blooms from the Heart,” received $300 in support of her organization’s work in presenting more than 4,000 reclaimed floral arrangements for delivery to nursing homes and hospices. Loc Nguyen of Silvergate Elementary School received $300 to further the improvements to the school garden. In a fourth award, an undetermined amount will be used by a team of garden club gardeners to design and re-plant the landscape gardens surrounding the main building at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma. Stroll & Roll again set for May 19 at Liberty Station San Diego Adaptive Sports Foundation and HeadNorth will partner on May 19 to host the fourth annual Stroll & Roll event at NTC Park near Liberty Station. The unique event brings together two organizations who share the same passion to promote active and independent lifestyles for youth and adults with physical disabilities.  All money raised will directly support San Diego Adaptive Sports Foundation and HeadNorth, programs devoted to improving the lives of individuals with physical injuries, illnesses and disease.  Stroll & Roll begins with a 2K and 5K Fun Run/Walk and Roll, followed by breakfast, wheelchair sports demonstrations and a vendor fair.  Athletes will showcase their skills while able-bodied guests get the chance to try out sports like wheelchair basketball, rugby and more in specially adapted wheelchairs. There will also be a silent auction and raffle.  Food trucks will offer breakfast and lunch options with a percentage of the proceeds donated to Stroll & Roll’s cause.   NTC Park is located at 2455 Cushing Road.
