La Jolla cagers capture tourney
The La Jolla High boys basketball team, returning nine varsity players from last year, is off to a fast start in the young season.
Last week, the Vikings defeated Madison, Kearny, Santana, Clairemont, and ” in the finals of the La Jolla Tournament at La Jolla Saturday night ” ran away from A.V. Miller High of Fontana 85-62 to win the championship trophy.
La Jolla’s senior forward Andrew Heap, last season’s leading scorer (16 points per game) and All-Western League forward, earned most valuable player for the La Jolla Tournament, joining Jack Peterson and Spencer Moyer on the all-tournament team.
In the title game, Moyer had 21 points, Heap 17, Peter Sefton 15, Jerrell Agnew 13 and Peterson 11.
Kevin Campbell and Matt Jones also contributed quality minutes during the tournament, with Jones scoring 30 points in the first three games before being injured in the semifinal game against Clairemont.
La Jolla is competing in the Kiwanis tournament this week.
