Lady Torreys take tourney
The La Jolla Country Day School girls basketball team captured its own La Jolla Country Day Sweet 16 Tournament last week.
The Lady Torreys scored wins over Modesto Christian (57-45), IMG Academy (59-36), San Clemente (50-27) and a championship game triumph over Regis Jesuit of Colorado (63-54).
In the championship, LJCD built an early 17-point lead and held on to beat Regis Jesuit. Regis cut LJCD’s lead to three points late in the third quarter, but behind the trio of Jamesha Townsend’s 16 points, Janae Fulcher’s 14 and Dominique Conners’ 13 points, the Lady Torreys remained unbeaten at 4-0.
Christian outlasts Bishop’s, 31-21
Christian High punched a ticket for itself into the CIF Division V football championship with its 31-21 win over The Bishop’s School in last Friday’s semifinals.
The Knights got three touchdowns through the air from QB Tommy Wornham, including a pair to Tim Costello (50, 5 yards).
With the loss, Bishop’s finished its season with a record of 7-5. Christian, meantime, will meet Francis Parker this Friday for the championship.
LJ harriers finish 19th at state
The La Jolla High boys cross-country team placed 19th out of 24 teams in its division at the recent state championships in Fresno.
La Jolla was led by Angel Mendoza (17:10) and Trevor Dorne (17:11), finishing 103rd and 106th, respectively.
Jonathan Westman was La Jolla’s third runner with 17:30, followed closely by Mike Conroy (17:33), who was the fourth fastest freshman in Division III.
Thamine Dalichaouch (17:53) finished 123rd as La Jolla’s last scoring runner. Senior Tucker Bass (132) ran his best of the year, and Daniel Holl (137) displaced other runners.
