LJ baseball banquet honors sluggers
The La Jolla High baseball team recently held its annual season-ending banquet.
Award winners included: Trent Jemmett (MVP), Patrick Christensen (Cy Young), Peter Sefton (Most Improved), Robert Sprong/Jack Peterson (Team Captain), Peterson/Sprong (Viking Warrior Coaches Award) and Jemmett (Gold Glove).
La Jolla finished at 21-10 overall, 8-4 in the Western League (co-champs). The Vikings tied the school record for wins in a season. Jemmett finished with a single-season hits record of 45.
Breakfast Club serves up wheelchair tennis event
The San Diego Breakfast Club of America will host its first Wheelchair Tennis Tournament and Luau during a charity event Saturday, June 16.
Nearly 50 disabled and wheelchair-bound professional, semi-professional and recreation-oriented athletes are expected to participate in the event, slated to take place at the Barnes Tennis Center in Point Loma, 4490 W. Point Loma Blvd.
La Jollan Dick Enberg, a local and national sports broadcaster, will call the championship match with Jim McClaren at 5 p.m.
Proceeds from the event will go to Sharp Rehabilitation Center Services for sports recreation and wellness programs for the disabled. Funding will be used to help improve the lives of those who have suffered from serious illnesses and injuries, according to event organizers.
